Coloring is one of the simplest ways to slow down, relax, and reconnect with your creativity. Whether you’re picking up your very first coloring book or you’ve been coloring for years, a few thoughtful techniques can make every page even more enjoyable.
Here are ten of my favorite cozy coloring tips to help you create beautiful pages while making the experience even more relaxing.
🌸 1. Start With a Color Palette
Before you begin coloring, choose three to six colors that work beautifully together. Having a small color palette keeps your page feeling cohesive and makes choosing colors much less overwhelming.
Soft pastels create dreamy pages, earthy tones feel calm and cozy, while brighter colors can make an illustration feel cheerful and full of life.
🖍️ 2. Test Your Colors First
Even if you’re using the same brand of markers or pencils, colors often look different on paper than they do on the barrel.
Keep a small swatch sheet nearby so you can test each color before committing it to your page. It only takes a few seconds and can save you from surprises later.
📄 3. Protect the Next Page
If you’re coloring with alcohol markers, place a piece of cardstock or scrap paper behind the page you’re working on. This simple trick helps protect the pages underneath from bleed-through and lets you color with confidence.
Even if your coloring book is single-sided, having a protective sheet underneath can make the experience much more relaxing.
☕ 4. Create a Cozy Coloring Space
Coloring isn’t just about the finished page—it’s about the experience.
Light a candle, pour yourself a cup of tea or coffee, put on your favorite playlist, and settle into a cozy chair. Creating a relaxing atmosphere turns coloring into a little act of self-care instead of just another hobby.

🌈 5. There Are No Rules
One of the best things about coloring is that there isn’t a “right” way to do it.
Pumpkins don’t have to be orange. Cats don’t have to be gray. Trees don’t have to be green. If a lavender cottage, pink forest, or rainbow sky makes you smile, then you’ve created something beautiful.
Your coloring book is your own little world—have fun with it!
✨ 6. Add Small Finishing Touches
Tiny details can make a finished page feel extra special.
A white gel pen is perfect for adding little highlights, stars, sparkles, reflections, or stitching details after you’ve finished coloring. Just a few simple touches can make your artwork feel polished without adding a lot of extra work.
🌿 7. Don’t Be Afraid to Take a Break
Sometimes the best thing you can do for a coloring page is step away for a little while.
If you’re feeling stuck choosing colors or simply aren’t enjoying the page anymore, put it aside and come back later. A fresh perspective often makes everything feel easier, and coloring should always be something you look forward to—not something you feel pressured to finish.
🎨 8. Mix Your Favorite Coloring Supplies
You don’t have to choose just one way to color.
Try combining alcohol markers, colored pencils, gel pens, or fineliners to create different textures and effects. Every artist develops their own style over time, so don’t be afraid to experiment and discover what makes you happiest.
📸 9. Celebrate Every Finished Page
Every completed page is something to be proud of, whether it’s your very first or your hundredth.
Snap a quick photo before closing your book—you’ll love looking back at your progress over time. If you’d like to share your creations with fellow colorists, we’d love to see them on the Little Stardust Press Community Coloring Wall!
💜 10. Remember That Coloring Is About Joy
The most beautiful coloring page isn’t always the most perfectly blended or the most detailed.
It’s the one that made you smile, helped you relax, or gave you a peaceful moment during a busy day.
Give yourself permission to color outside the lines, try unexpected color combinations, and simply enjoy the creative process. There is no perfect page—only your page.
✨ Until Next Time…
I hope these little tips inspire you to slow down, get cozy, and enjoy every page you color.
At Little Stardust Press, every book is created with the hope of bringing a little more calm, creativity, and joy into your day.
Until next time, keep creating cozy moments.
Happy coloring! 💜
