Colouring is already a pretty great excuse to slow down for a little while — but with the right setup, it can turn into an entire cozy little ritual.
You don’t need a perfectly styled craft room, an enormous marker collection, or three uninterrupted hours. Grab a colouring book, find a comfortable spot, and add one or two of these things to make your next colouring session feel even better.

1. Put On a Playlist You Love

There’s something about colouring with good music playing in the background that just works.
Pick something that matches the page you’re colouring — mellow acoustic music for a rainy little coffee shop, throwback songs for a retro page, or a completely ridiculous playlist you know every word to.
If you’re colouring one of the retro-inspired pages from Vinyl Vibes or Mixtape Memories, this is practically mandatory.

2. Make Your Favorite Drink
Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, iced coffee, sparkling water — whatever makes sitting down to colour feel a little more like a treat.
Put it in the mug or glass you actually like instead of grabbing whatever is closest. Tiny detail, surprisingly large difference.
Just maybe keep it slightly farther away from the markers than you think you need to.
We learn these things.

3. Put On a Comfort Show

You know the one.
The show you’ve already watched enough times that you don’t actually have to look at the screen every thirty seconds.
Colouring is perfect for rewatches because your hands have something to do while you listen, and there’s no pressure to follow every tiny plot detail.
Bonus points if you end up saying, “Okay, just one more page,” at exactly the same time you say, “Okay, just one more episode.”

4. Listen to an Audiobook or Podcast
If music isn’t your thing, colouring and audiobooks are an elite combination.
Because colouring keeps your hands busy without requiring a ton of mental effort, it can actually be easier to settle into a story or podcast without reaching for your phone every five minutes.
Choose a simple page, get comfortable, hit play, and disappear for a while.

5. Give Yourself a Tiny Colour Palette
Sometimes staring at 100 markers is less relaxing than it sounds. Instead, pick just four or five colors before you start.
Try any of these combinations:
- dusty pink + sage + warm brown + cream
- lavender + soft blue + peach + yellow
- terracotta + mustard + olive + deep red
- pink + aqua + purple + sunny yellow
A limited palette makes choosing colours much easier — and it can make the finished page look surprisingly pulled together.
And yes, you are absolutely allowed to use the same favorite palette over and over again. There are no colouring police.

6. Make Yourself a Little Snack Plate
This does not need to become a Pinterest-level charcuterie situation. A few crackers. Some fruit. Chocolate. Popcorn. Whatever you have. Put it on a plate, bring it over to your colouring spot, and suddenly your random Tuesday-night colouring session feels like an event.
Honestly, we should be doing more unnecessary little snack plates in general.

7. Put Your Phone Somewhere Else
Possibly the hardest suggestion on this list.
Even twenty or thirty minutes without notifications, scrolling, emails, or checking what everyone else is doing can make colouring feel completely different.
Put your phone across the room, choose a page, and give yourself permission to do something that doesn’t need to be productive, optimized, posted, or finished. You can even leave half the page uncoloured.
It will survive.

Your Cozy Colouring Night Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
The best part about colouring is that there really isn’t a correct way to do it. You can spend two hours carefully shading every tiny detail or color half a page while watching TV in your pajamas. Both count.
So grab a book, choose a few colours, put something good on in the background, and make yourself comfortable.
Sometimes a quiet little hour with markers and a coloring page is more than enough.
